H.97 ~ A Graduated Licensing Bill - Effective July 1, 2000
H-97 ~ An Act Relating To A Graduated Driver
License Program has been added to this site
There are 3 main sections of
interest on this site:
PARENT PAGES:
This section is devoted to the parents of a new driver. Basic
steps are outlined which will allow this parent, and their new driver, to adjust to the
new seat in the vehicle! The section is supported with a guide which I wrote a few years
ago entitled : "A Parent's Survival Guide to Driver Education".
It is a step by step "tool" for parents to use as their practice sessions
develop. Included with the guide is a convenient log for a parent and teen to keep
track of the hours spent practicing, the date practiced, the weather conditions, as well
as the activity that was covered and/or experienced.
Most professional driver educators I have spoken with strongly
recommend a minimum of 50 to 100 hours of supervised practice driving for any new
driver. Inexperience, (or, as I call it: "lack of chair time")
is one of the major causes of our youth becoming involved in automobile crashes.
This guide will ensure that both the new driver and the parent allow the proper
"chair time" to gain this much needed experience. The six hours of behind
the wheel "instruction" required by the State of Vermont falls way short of
the total hours needed to master the required skills for today's major highways and complex
traffic situations.
Parent-Teen contracts are included in this
program to ensure a total understanding of the level (and boundaries) of the parent/teen
responsibility. ParentNites are scheduled for your convenience before each class
session to familiarize you with the guide. There is a link available on the
ParentNite page for anyone to register. Class enrollment is NOT a requirement for
attendance - and the event is FREE to all. (The guide, and related materials, is
available to non-enrolled students at a cost of $12.50, and you may order one directly off
this site on the Request Form.) Take the link to the Parent Page and assistance section.

A PERMIT STUDY GUIDE for
the Vermont Learner's Permit written test is available. This is made available to
all visitors to this web site. A Vermont Learner's Permit is required before
attending any class offered by Driver Education of Vermont.
The Vermont
Department of Motor Vehicles has just uploaded the 42nd Edition of the Vermont Driver's
Manual on the web for all of us to review and study. Now, for the first time in
Vermont's history, a student may study the manual and prepare for their Permit Test
online. Click on the underlined wording above to get started.
Added to this site are ROAD-SIGN
MATCHING GAMES. Currently there are 5 states from which to
choose a game. Test your Road Sign knowledge off the Permit Study Page - just for
the fun of it!
Password protected for enrolled students will be course outlines,
reading and written assignments, worksheets, driving schedules, editorials written by
students and their parents, guest speaker schedules, and PowerPoint Presentations
(parallel parking, perpendicular parking, vehicle familiarization, interstate entrance and
exits procedures... and more will be added as development time permits). If there
are any teachers out there willing to share their PowerPoint Presentations I would be very
happy to hear from them. I will share (exchange) ideas, materials, worksheets,
outlines, booklets, ....anything I have, for anything YOU might be willing to share.
