Photographs to Help You Visualize the

on the Previous Page

Approach, with your right turn signal activated, using reference points to
align your vehicle beside, and 2-3 feet away from the forward vehicle. Use the rear
reference point to align both rear bumpers. |

Shift to reverse, look to rear corner of the parking place and select a
target (preferably the CURB, just in front of the rear vehicle). Turn the wheel
aggressively to the right as you creep backwards . When aligned with
the target, straighten the tires so your movement is directed toward the rear target.
LOOK BACK, only glance forward. Note: the angle is A LOT LESS than 45 degrees. |

Back
slowly until a "reference point" (keep reading!) is reached. I use the 3-4 foot space
mentioned earlier - When the driver is "in" this space (your
vision directly forward would be 'blocked' by the open driver's door), and your front bumper is
clear,
you may steer left to bring the front of the vehicle "in" toward the curb.
(Note photo on the left. Some teachers use antenna location, some vent grills in the
dash for this reference point. Explore this position, as your car may have
yet another 'reference point'!)
In these 3 photographs, the car is in
the SAME position. |

As the
nose of the vehicle creeps in, be sure that when you become "parallel"
to the curb that you straighten the tires. Look at the left photograph. You can tell what
would happen if the driver continued in reverse and did NOT straighten the
tires (you'd hit the curb!).
The photo on the right now leaves the driver with just centering the vehicle in the
parking space.
(Yes, it was a big space. It was practice!) |
