Reference Photos
Let's Start with 6 Reference Points

Objective: Objective: A reference point refers to measuring some part of the roadway with a point on your vehicle, thus giving you an accurate picture of your vehicle's position. Know each vehicle you drive.

Directions: Directions: Place 2x4's (or a tape measure) as shown by the dark lines in the diagram below.  If you have any difficulty visualizing the CAD drawing, go to the Reference Photo page for digital pictures of the 6 reference points.

Sample Step 1: Left tire path: Note the point on vehicle where driver's line of sight intersects the DOT (at the left headlight). To determine how much the driver can't see around a car measure from the DOT (where the driver can see) back to the vehicle.

Notice 3 & 4: The "curb/stop line" point(s) on the vehicle coincide with the sideview mirrors. (These are used for a STOP line, parking curb, the back of the garage !?) Check Out 5 & 6: How far into the back door window ledge is the reference point? (#6: close to the door lock? ... half way back?) Check Out 5 & 6: How far into the back door window ledge is the reference point? (#6: close to the door lock? ... half way back?)

Make sure the driver does not change their seating position as this will effect their reference point(s). If the driver feels they can see by sitting-up, ask them how far they have to sit-up to see their front bumper (or their license plate) ! Sit-back and remain in control. Use reference points!
