Getting Turned Around Safely Requires Practice

Objective: The objective of this lesson is to learn the Vermont State Legal Turn-around. Please refer to the Vermont Driver's Manual How To Turn Around on page 25 of the 41st Edition. Also, reference page 83 of the Parent Survival Guide to Driver Education. This is part of the (license) Vermont Road Test.

Car 2: Signal - WITHIN the intersection (to pull to the side of the road)
Car 3: Stop - fully and shift to reverse
Note: attaining lane position #3 - see Parent Guide
Car 4: Back and Turn - steer right - look back
Car 5: Stop at Line - behind crosswalk, signal left
Note: attaining lane position #2 (or #1)
Car 6: Turn Left - between break in centerline
Car 7: That's Legal - accelerate to a safe speed

Don't signal too early (car 1); a car at position 5 would pull out in front of you. At position 3-5 make sure the driver focuses 90% of their attention to the REAR. They should face forward AFTER they straighten their wheels and stop (car 5). Stop clear (and behind) the crosswalk.
