
Getting Turned Around Safely Requires Practice

Objective:
The objective of this lesson is to learn the Vermont State Legal Turn-around. Please refer
to the Vermont Driver's Manual How To Turn Around on page 25 of the 41st Edition.
Also, reference page 83 of the Parent Survival Guide to Driver Education.
This is part of the (license) Vermont Road Test.
Directions:

Car 1: Approach - observing all surrounding traffic
Car 2: Signal - WITHIN the intersection (to pull to the side of the road)
Car 3: Stop - fully and shift to reverse

Car 4: Back and Turn - steer right - look back
Car 5: Stop at Line - behind crosswalk, signal left

Car 6: Turn Left - between break in centerline
Car 7: That's Legal - accelerate to a safe speedDirections:

Don't signal too early (car 1); a
car at position 5 would pull out in front of you. At position 3-5 make sure the driver
focuses 90% of their attention to the REAR. They should face forward AFTER they straighten
their wheels and stop (car 5). Stop clear (and behind) the crosswalk.

| Car 1: Observe the intersection as you approach |
| Car 2: Signal right when you are within the intersection and
select a target down the side road. |
| Car 3: Pull to side of road, stop, shift to reverse. |
| Car 4: Back around corner (steering toward target) when
clear. |
| Car 5: Stop behind crosswalk and stop-line, shift to a
forward gear, signal for a left turn. |
| Car 6: Make the left turn between the break in the center
line. |
| Car 7: You have safely and completely turned around. |
